Summary assessment of costs: new guideline hourly ratesNew guideline rates for solicitors and counsel when costs are summarily assessed have been published by HM Courts Service at Appendix 2 to The Guide to Summary Assessment. The guideline rates for counsel (in the Queen's Bench and Chancery Divisions and the Administrative Court) and for solicitors have typically been increased by about 6% on the previous rates published in 2005. This takes the guideline hourly rates for solicitors in the City of London to £380 (Grade A), £274 (Grade B), £210 (Grade C) and £129 (Grade D).
The guidance states that a significantly higher rate for Grade A fee earners may be justified in substantial and complex litigation, depending on the value of the litigation, the level of complexity, the urgency or importance of the matter and any international element.
